Database Specialist

Luhdorff and Scalmanini, Consulting Engineers (LSCE) is a groundwater consulting firm (~45 employees) with offices in Woodland, Oakland, Fresno, and Chico, California. LSCE provides engineering, hydrogeologic, and related groundwater services to municipalities, water districts, and other public and private entities throughout California. We seek a motivated and versatile Database Specialist to join our team of water resources and engineering professionals. The Database Specialist will work closely with our water resources scientists and engineers to provide expertise in the identification, management, analysis, and presentation of data (both temporal and spatial data) to meet project objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

  • Work with, improve and expand existing in-house Microsoft (MS) Access project databases
  • Design and create new enterprise-level SQL driven relational databases
  • Migrate data and/or convert MS Access to enterprise SQL server databases
  • Be the firm’s point person for external database designers/consultants
  • Communicate with internal IT team for optimal system compatibility/efficiency/security
  • Integration between engineering data (AutoCAD) and other types of data (spatial and non-spatial)
  • Work with various types of engineering and hydrogeologic data, including spatial and temporal data
  • Acquire, organize, and document publicly available geospatial data
  • Developing, documenting, and implementing internal data management processes and procedures
  • Work with Geographic Information System (GIS) data libraries, databases, and datasets; and integrate GIS with MS Access and enterprise SQL databases for project-specific solutions
  • Oversee database and GIS software and hardware needs (e.g., licensing, software updates/patches, GIS infrastructure and IT planning)


  • Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field
  • Minimum five years related work experience or a Master’s degree in a related field with three years of work experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Access, SQL server database/platforms, and/or other relational databases
  • Experience in developing an enterprise-level database from pre-existing MS Access databases
  • Experience in database management and demonstrated ability to develop and document data processing, QA testing and management procedures
  • Experience setting up database backups and recovery including automation of the backup process
  • Experience in data security
  • Knowledgeable of ArcGIS and geospatial data sources and formats
  • Knowledgeable in cloud-based systems and other resources to enable on-line public access to datasets, graphics, and mapping tools (e.g., Tableau, etc.)
  • Basic science knowledge including chemistry and mathematical concepts (e.g., chemical element names/abbreviations, conversion between units of measure)
  • Strong temporal and spatial data analysis skills
  • Interest in learning and using new software, systems, and technologies to evaluate temporal and spatial relationships and the ability to demonstrate these tools to others
  • Careful attention to detail, accuracy, and consistency
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively collaborate and work with others
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines


  • Background or experience working with science-based datasets and engineering-related firms
  • Experience with Python, ModelBuilder, ArcSDE, web mapping
  • Conversant with current and developing database technologies
  • Demonstrated capacity to plan, develop, and evaluate future programs and services
  • Understanding and experience coordinating shared database and GIS operations and resources between multiple offices
  • Familiar with data (temporal and spatial) acquisition and processing
